Allen Park, Michigan
Fairlane Green is the first of its kind. Located on an industrial landfill, this large scale shopping complex incorporates green technology into every piece of the landscape. Unlike other shopping complexes, Fairlane Green will leave two-thirds of the site undeveloped for green space. It will also incorporate a 43-acre park and 3.5 miles of recreational trails.
The site is composed of a series of connected bioswales and wetlands that manage storm water and provide habitat for fish and wildlife. Around the buildings and throughout the landscape are a series of native grass prairies and hedgerows of trees and shrubs intended to mimic natural wildlife corridors.
The buildings incorporate green screens, skylights and highly reflective roofing to minimize energy consumption. This project recently received a LEED Gold rating from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
